Our History

Marport was established in Iceland in 1996 to develop acoustic monitoring systems for deep sea commercial fishing. Early technical activities—including acoustic engineering and sensor production, were outsourced to Stout Marine Inc., based in Everett, Washington. Stout Marine was a pioneer in trawl-mounted sonar systems and other advanced fishing technologies.

Following the passing of founder Merle Stout in 2001, Marport Iceland acquired Stout Marine and renamed it Marport Stout Inc. The company subsequently moved to Snohomish, Washington.

In October 2013, Marport Deep Sea Technology was acquired by Airmar Technology Corporation, headquartered in Milford, New Hampshire. Prior to the acquisition, Airmar had collaborated with Marport on several successful product developments.

Today, Marport and Airmar engineering and manufacturing teams work together seamlessly to develop innovative technologies and product designs that generate value across various markets beyond commercial fishing. All Marport products are meticulously manufactured at Airmar’s U.S.-based facilities, where they undergo rigorous quality testing before being distributed worldwide.

Technological Development

In 2005, an engineering team led by Didier Caute developed a successful proof-of-concept for Software Defined Sonar (SDS), demonstrating its technical and commercial promise. Today, SDS is a core technology used throughout Marport’s product line and is widely implemented in both commercial and recreational sonar markets.

In 2022, Marport introduced the Pro line of sensors, which deliver high-resolution trawl data to the vessel via Marport’s SCALA software. SCALA aggregates sensor data from multiple points on the trawl nets and doors, providing captains with a clear, visual representation of trawl performance for more informed and efficient decision-making.

Marport NX represents the latest evolution in sensor and software integration. Designed to streamline onboard sensor usage, the NX platform improves performance while reducing field labor. Its compact, single-bottle design offers extended battery life, improved durability, and a redesigned quick-release mechanism that enables faster and easier removal from the net housing—minimizing downtime and simplifying maintenance.
